How to prepare files for laser cutting and engraving

A well-prepared file saves time and money. Here is what the laser needs — and what to do if you only have an image.

A laser works along vector curves — precise lines that the beam follows. The better the file is prepared, the faster and cheaper production is. Do not worry, though: if you only have an image or a sketch, we will prepare the vector for you.

The ideal file format

Vector: SVG, DXF, AI or PDF (curves, not pixels)
Photo engraving: a good-quality PNG/JPG with good contrast
Always convert text to curves so that the font does not change

Separate cutting from engraving

A laser does two different things: it cuts (goes through the material) and it engraves (marks the surface). It is good to distinguish them in the file — for example by line colour or separate layers. That way we know exactly what is a cut and what is a design.

What to watch out for

Real dimensions — state the target size in mm
Very thin details may break off during cutting
Closed curves for cuts (open lines may not create a shape)
Material — tell us what the design should be cut from or engraved on

I only have an image or an idea

No problem. We will prepare a cutting vector and the design from a photo, logo or hand sketch. We include this preparation in the price in advance, so you know where you stand.
